Healthcare Reform means…
From my main man, Barack. I know lots of people got this, but it still made me tear up a little:
Abigail —
I’m writing to you on a great day for America.
This morning, I gathered with members of Congress, my administration, and hardworking volunteers from every part of the country to sign comprehensive health care reform into law. Thanks to the immeasurable efforts of so many, the dream of reform is now a reality.
The bill I just signed puts Americans in charge of our own health care by enacting three key changes:
It establishes the toughest patient protections in history.
It guarantees all Americans affordable health insurance options, extending coverage to 32 million who are currently uninsured.
And it reduces the cost of care — cutting over 1 trillion dollars from the federal deficit over the next two decades.
To ensure a successful, stable transition, many of these changes will phase into full effect over the next several years.
But for millions of Americans, many of the benefits of reform will begin this year — some even taking effect this afternoon. Here are just a few examples:
Small businesses will receive significant tax cuts, this year, to help them afford health coverage for all their employees.
Seniors will receive a rebate to reduce drug costs not yet covered under Medicare.
Young people will be allowed coverage under their parents’ plan until the age of 26.
Early retirees will receive help to reduce premium costs.
Children will be protected against discrimination on the basis of medical history.
Uninsured Americans with pre-existing conditions can join a special high-risk pool to get the coverage they need, starting in just 90 days.
Insured Americans will be protected from seeing their insurance revoked when they get sick, or facing restrictive annual limits on the care they receive.
All Americans will benefit from significant new investments to train primary care doctors, nurses, and public health professionals, and the creation of state-level consumer assistance programs to help all patients understand and defend our new rights.
As I’ve said many times, and as I know to be true, this astounding victory could not have been achieved without your tireless efforts.
So as we celebrate this great day, I want to invite you to add your name where it belongs: alongside mine as a co-signer of this historic legislation. Organizing for America will record the names of co-signers as a permanent commemoration of those who came together to make this moment possible — all of you who refused to give up until the dream of many generations for affordable, quality care for all Americans was finally fulfilled.
So, if you haven’t yet, please add your name as a proud health care reform co-signer today:
http://my.barackobama.com/cosigner
Please accept my thanks for your voice, for your courage, and for your indispensable partnership in the great work of creating change.
History, and I, are in your debt.

499 - Gems on the web
This is post 499! Eek! Kind of exciting :)
Anyway, some gems on the web: I’m dying to make this quilt. I think I’ve said this before…because someone else had a lovely cross quilt in red and white. But I just love Betty’s in pink and off white. Awesome.
I’ve been asked to make a purse for someone…I do enjoy making purses, but I make little fabric purses. Not nice, stylish leather purses that cool girls in NYC carry or care about. I’m not a cool city girl. I’m a plain homebody girl who likes to sew. ANYWAY, I’m going out on a ledge here and I’ve decided to make this purse, but without the bow. I’ll be using black linen for the main body, and I got a fun floral silk for the binding. We’ll see how it goes.
The best gem on the web these days is my main man Barack. So, if you haven’t read it, it might be wise to familiarize yourself with the health care plan he’s laid out…get it from the horse’s mouth, not the horse’s asses all over the tv.
My final gem for the day is this video…my college band from 1996. I’m in there somewhere, dancing my spandexed-ass off. If you have a spare 8 minutes, you’ll see a glimpse of one of the happiest times in my life. Yay Marching Knights! The Pride of Central Florida!

Gen. Powell on Meet the Press
Thank you, Gen. Powell, for being thoughtful and objective. I couldn’t (really couldn’t) have said it better myself. Listen, people! This is a guy who actually puts country first - not just uses it as a campaign slogan.

The Talk
Here’s a slightly annoying little email I spammed to all my family and friends…thought I’d share it here too. Feel free to copy and paste it in a spam email of your own!
I’ve been thinking a lot about the election and how important it is to our families. Normally, I would spare you all my opinions, but this time, it’s just too important. I’m not really ready to make good on my threat to move to Canada should things not work out, so I figured I better start spreading the word.
I’ve decided to support Barack Obama, and wanted to let you know why.
There are many rumors floating around out there, so here’s some information about Barack’s positions on things I know are important to you:
— Economy: http://my.barackobama.com/EconomyFlyer
— Health Care: http://my.barackobama.com/HealthcareFlyer
— Education: http://my.barackobama.com/EducationFlyer
This is probably going to be the most important election in my lifetime, and it’s something I strongly believe in. So let’s talk about it. Ask me anything.

debates and premiers
I’ve been away so long, I don’t know where to start. First of all, I just finished watching the first debate, and let me just say that I’m glad John McCain deigned to show up, and I was so annoyed with his constant assertion that Obama didn’t understand/didn’t get it/was showing naievete. Give me a break. I was proud of my main man Barack for not even acknowledging the annoying little comments. We know the truth, Barack. You understand what’s going on and where the country should be headed much better than the McCain/Palin team.
I chose CBS, and I think Katie did great, but I’m not sure what’s going on with her eyeliner. And who is T. Boone Pickens? Did anyone else see that commercial about pickensplan.com? I’m going to have to check that out.
Now, onto the important issue of fall premiers. Holy crap - ER was so good. I’m not going to spoil it for the TiVo watchers, but I was sobbing out loud! Not just tears, but noisy sobbing. Last week, I went on a trip, and I made the mistake of bringing One Tree Hill with me in my iPod. I say mistake because it was the episode before this week’s - Q’s funeral. So I was crying and crying on a plane, next to some kid who was either headed for or from Basic Training. He probably thought I was so wierd.
NCIS was great, but not on the same level as ER. We haven’t seen the Mentalist yet, it’s still in the TiVo, but I’m looking forward to it. In fact, I still have Heroes and Ugly Betty to watch. Every day I wait for my new DVR from Verizon, I’m falling further and further behind! I did watch Grey’s Anatomy online, and it was excellent. I hope that Army guy comes back - I’ve liked all of his shows that have been cancelled. I even liked the red hair. I’m also totally digging Fringe. Another excellent offering from JJ Abrams.
I mean, what kind of cable company goes digital the week before the fall season starts and then doesn’t have a good plan in place to get equipment out to people? SO LAME.

Tristan’s Top 10
On one of my yahoo! groups, we’ve been discussing politics quite a bit, even though its really a quilting group. There are some very smart, vocal people on there. This was recently posted by Tristan - fellow quilter and Democrat. He can be found at www.manmadequilts.com. Anyway, here’s the top ten reasons he’s voting for Obama/Biden - I think he summed it up pretty well (more after the jump):

palin family
In my last post, I said if Palin wasn’t pro-life, I’d love her. Well, upon further inspection, that’s not really true. She has a gorgeous family, but I think she’s really just too conservative for me - against same-sex marriage, against sex-ed in school, pro-life. I’m watching her now on the RNC, and she’s a pretty terrible telepromter reader, and she’s boring. But she is pretty. She looks like Tina Fey. So far, she’s not talking about anything at all and it’s about 20 minutes into her speech. I’m also not sure what the crowd is going crazy about.
It does sound like she put up a good fight against big oil, but I wonder how long that would last if they made it into office?
Here’s what Sierra Club has to say about McCain’s energy record:
http://www.sierraclub.org/politics/candidates/mccain.asp
I do think it’s funny that she’s saying that because she’s not a member of Washington elite, some people consider her unqualified. Isn’t that what they say about Obama?
Ugh. I really just want to fast forward her.
Now she’s picking on my main man, Barack, and she sounds like a pretty, more eloquent version of Bush. Fear, terrorism, fire and brimstone…blah blah blah.
“He’s worried that someone won’t read them their rights.” That’s right - we have civil liberties in this country, dumb ass!
I really dislike these Republicans. I think I’ll call them Repugnant-ans from now on.
Look at me, I coined a phrase!
Hooray, my Tivo just cut her off. Whew!
I did like when the littlest girl was licking her hand and smoothing the baby’s hair down, though.
