Candidates on Colbert

If you didn’t see these videos - take a minute to watch. As always, Colbert is hilarious, but Clinton, Edwards and Obama are pretty good too. Especially Edwards.

John Edwards drops out

I think this is a sad day for Democrats. I’d like to see him as the running mate for either candidate, in fact, that would help me make a decision! Here’s his speech…

My treasure for a caucus

Wouldn’t it be fun to be an Iowan? I have been begging my family and friends to discuss politics with me. My mother-in-law, who lives in Paris, and my German sister-in-law, had more opinions on US politics than any of my fellow country-men. What does that say about the system?

I would love to be a caucus-goer…debating with my neighbors about why my team is the best. “Come to my side…here’s why!”

The problem is, I don’t have a side. Well, I have a side, and it’s decidedly DEMOCRAT, but among the dems, I’m a little confused. I’m having trouble figuring out how to really find the minutia of the plans of Obama, Edwards and Clinton. I’m increasingly more and more in support of John Edwards, but I’m afraid he’s just not going to have enough money to see the process through.

My brother-in-law made a comment about “what’s the point? The free mason’s already know who the presidents will be for the next 50 years” or something like that. I can’t tell you how much this saddens me.

I don’t care what secret societies are at work. I have hope, and I want change. I want the middle class to be saved. I want corrupt big business out of business. I want WalMart to only buy clothes manufactured in countries with fair labor laws (like Cambodia!) and to stop ruling the economies of third-world countries by demanding cheap jeans. I want Americans to pay attention to the products they’re buying and have a little personal responsibility for the choices they make.

I want my husband and my brother-in-law to get informed and get excited about the political process.

I want my son to grow up hopeful, not full of disillusionment and apathy.

Do I want too much?

Memorial Day

Just for info…because LOTS of people don’t know…here’s what Memorial Day is all about: it’s a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service.

Two years ago, I was in DC for a conference for work. I was seven months pregnant, and I decided to hike a few miles through Arlington National Cemetery to find my maternal great-grandparents’ graves. It was so hot, and I didn’t bring any water. It took a little doing (and a lot of sweating), but I found their graves, and I was so proud. As I was walking back to the Metro, I saw a full funeral procession, complete with caisson and I started bawling. Even sadder was all the fresh grave sites at the front of the cemetery.

This little journey was as much a tribute to my unborn son, mother and grandmother as it was to my great-grandparents. My mom passed away on June 5, 1994. The day I went to Arlington was June 6, 2005. My grandmother died before I was born. My great grandfather was a West Point grad, retired as a Colonel in the Army (after serving in WWI and WWII), and then worked for the CIA. My great grandmother gets to be buried next to him, so they rest side by side in the nation’s most well known military cemetery. I cried for all the family my son will never know, and for the proud military heritage I have on both sides of my family. On my mother’s side, military service goes all the way back to the Revolutionary War. On my father’s side, I’m the latest (and the first female) of at least one of each generation serving in either the Army, Air Force or Navy. We don’t have any Marines - yet. But we do have a nurse, a few pilots and at least one Airborne Ranger.

I plan to visit the other national cemeteries where my family members are buried. Even the one in Hawaii where my great uncle - my father (and my son’s) namesake - is buried, after being shot down during WWII.

I hope we all remember to take a minute to remember these men and women - and to be grateful for their sacrifice. I’m certain I wouldn’t be running my mouth on this blog all the time if it wasn’t for them ensuring my free speech.

John Edwards has set up a great site called SupportTheTroopsEndTheWar.com - it’s got a lot of activities we can do during Memorial Day weekend (or every day - if you’re motivated) to voice our feelings that our Soldiers, Marines, Airmen and Sailors should not be in Iraq any longer.

Smart Entrepreneurs…depresident.com

Well, the smart entrepreneurs/funny liberals at dpresident.com are getting a jump on election gear. From Barack Obama t-shirts and stickers to “I heart elections” - this funny site is worth taking a look at.

From their About blurb: “Depresident.com is dedicated to bringing you fair and balanced Anti Bush facts, some truth and some pure truthiness.” Pretty funny. If you’ve got a little time, check out their Bushisms page…funny and sad at the same time.

Here are my favorite designs from their shop. I like the retro look of the oval, I like what they did with the’08 in vote, and I just plain love the “I heart elections” idea. I think I need one of those.

Hooray - I’ve got a new blog! Now I can put all my vast political opinions over there and keep this one light and fluffy and full of romance novels. I hope you’ll check out my new site, and link to me!

Right now, there’s only one new post. The rest are duplicate posts from here. Very soon though, it will be filled with interesting commentary, the latest news on the candidates, and mostly my long-winded, highly-biased opinions. Happy reading, and most importantly, happy voting!

Presidential Debates on MSNBC

politics from istockphoto.comFirst of all, if you haven’t seen the debates, I hope you’ll go to MSNBC and watch them. They’re broken up into short segments, so they’re easy to view. (Although I wish you could rewind.)

I also want to preface this by saying that although I liked Brian Williams and Chris Matthews, I felt that there was obviously more time and questions given to some candidates, and some candidates were clearly ignored. For example, I would have loved to hear more from Fmr. Sen. Mike Gravel on the Democratic Debate.

I would like to say that I’m on the fence, and giving both sides - dem and rep - equal time. But I’m not. I watched the whole Dem. debate, and although I was sick of Iraq and terrorism by the end of it, I was interested in what each one had to say, possibly with the exception of Gov. Bill Richardson. More on that later.

As I started the Republican Debate, I was instanly annoyed with their answers. Then as I moved onto the segment concerning abortion, and they all said, (paraphrasing, of course) “down with Roe v. Wade” - with the exception of a wishy-washy stance from Giuliani, I couldn’t watch anymore. There’s no way I’d vote for any of them.

I will go back and watch because I want to know what they stand for. I will go back and watch because I’m sure they will make good points, have valid ideas, and offer solutions that Democrats will not. But not today.

Here’s my snapshot take on each of the Democratic candidates (links go to their official election sites)…after the jump.
