munki munki martians for swap

Well, I’ll spare you the picture of the pajama pile that rises almost as high as my sewing table, but I’ve been maniacally visiting Marshalls and TJ Maxxes all over Southern California, hunting down any Munki Munki product I could find. Well, that’s not exactly true. I did choose to not buy a few pieces that I saw because I already had so many…like the shoes robe…which I already have five of. I mean - now I have to figure out how to unload all of this stuff on eBay or whatever. I know I’ll make my money back and get to keep all that I want for my stash, but I’m regretting getting so much. I just don’t have the room! And now I want to start sewing, but I have to get all this craziness organized and put away before I can do anything!

Here’s what I’ve found. I’ve entered into the fabric swapping world on Flickr - it’s going well so far. No creeps yet. Fingers crossed! So far, I’ve been able to swap for four more prints…very exciting!

Anyway, I think I’ve found the perfect pattern to bring them all together. Elizabeth over at Oh, Fransson! has come up with a Map of the States! block that I just love. She’s written a tutorial. I’m going to mostly follow it, but instead of cutting apart all the block pieces, I’m going to use paper piecing. Looking forward to it.

* Update - Just when I thought I had things all figured out, I ran across this awesome munki quilt tutorial…too many ideas. SOMEONE PLEASE CLEAN UP MY SEWING ROOM!

Bill O’Reilly vs. Eminem

Here’s a quote from yahoo.com’s story about Bill O’Reilly’s outrage at Eminem’s song “We Made You” in which he says dirty (funny) things about Sarah Palin:

“Few Americans take the vile rapper Eminem seriously,” he said. “He represents the lowest form of entertainment in this country and is a publicity hound to boot.”

“Kids see it, not adults,” said O’Reilly, adding that “no one over 25 listens to him.”

So, when Bill says “he represents the lowest form of entertainment in this country” - is he referring to rap? Or mocking others? And isn’t Bill a publicity hound as well?

I think Bill O’Reilly is an ass. But I really think he should clarify that comment because it seems like barely-veiled racism. It seems like he’s saying rap is the lowest form of entertainment, and I find that ridiculous. And then he goes on to use Travis Tritt as a counter example…saying

If Travis Tritt made a derogatory reference about Hilary Clinton or Michelle Obama , O’Reilly argued, media outlets would “kill him.”

Nonsense. First of all, why Travis Tritt? What crazy red-neck crap has he ever said? None. I love Travis Tritt. Leave him out of your garbage, Bill. Is country music the opposite of rap? Is that how Bill worked that out in his little pea brain?

Um, it’s not. In fact, lots of rap and R&B artists sing songs written by country music artists and vice versa. And doesn’t Miley Cyrus have a little rap song out now? A country rap? Someone must like it, right?

There are no boundaries.

Seriously, can’t we all just get along?

palin family

In my last post, I said if Palin wasn’t pro-life, I’d love her. Well, upon further inspection, that’s not really true. She has a gorgeous family, but I think she’s really just too conservative for me - against same-sex marriage, against sex-ed in school, pro-life. I’m watching her now on the RNC, and she’s a pretty terrible telepromter reader, and she’s boring. But she is pretty. She looks like Tina Fey. So far, she’s not talking about anything at all and it’s about 20 minutes into her speech. I’m also not sure what the crowd is going crazy about.

It does sound like she put up a good fight against big oil, but I wonder how long that would last if they made it into office?

Here’s what Sierra Club has to say about McCain’s energy record:

http://www.sierraclub.org/politics/candidates/mccain.asp

I do think it’s funny that she’s saying that because she’s not a member of Washington elite, some people consider her unqualified. Isn’t that what they say about Obama?

Ugh. I really just want to fast forward her.

Now she’s picking on my main man, Barack, and she sounds like a pretty, more eloquent version of Bush. Fear, terrorism, fire and brimstone…blah blah blah.

“He’s worried that someone won’t read them their rights.” That’s right - we have civil liberties in this country, dumb ass!

I really dislike these Republicans. I think I’ll call them Repugnant-ans from now on.

Look at me, I coined a phrase!

Hooray, my Tivo just cut her off. Whew!

I did like when the littlest girl was licking her hand and smoothing the baby’s hair down, though.

Of course I’m glued to the Olympics, but I’ve started Tivo-ing them because NBC is going CRAZY with commercial breaks. I think I’m just so used to the Tivo that I have no patience for commercials. Especially after each and every 5 minutes of Olympic coverage. I’m sure I’m missing really good Hallmark-esque

I heart swimmers!

I heart swimmers!

Olympic moments. I did catch the Johnson & Johnson commercial where Cullen Jones thanks his mom. I love that one. Of course, it made me cry.

I have to point out my favorite Olympic moments. I loved the giant printing press and the tai chi masters in the opening ceremony. The whole thing really appealed to my band-geek side - awesome formations, keeping those circles while doing all those crazy tai chi moves?! Awesome!

And of course, the men’s swimming relays have been so exciting. And the womens! Really, it’s all exciting. Although, I don’t seem to love gymnastics as much as I used to. I think I get a little caught up in the toll it’s taking on these girls - especially the Chinese ones (who are absolutely NOT 16). I do love that 33 year-old German lady though. I hope she wins a gold.

How about our President and family being the US’ biggest fan? On one hand, the “most spirited” in me is happy to see such high level support. I’m sure it means a great deal to the athletes, who definitely deserve the support. But the concerned citizen in me can’t help but think, “he sure has a lot of time on his hands!” I mean, telling Putin that Russia is using excessive force on the sovereign nation of Georgia and that he is against the bombing outside of South Ossetia is all well and good. Even asking for an Olympic cease-fire seems reasonable. Coming from anyone but George W. Bush. Who has been bombing the sovereign nation of Iraq for years now, who has called no such Olympic cease fire, who has no boundaries when it comes to acting on the offensive - even when there’s no defense.

Okay, enough with the soapbox.

Now, back to my normal viewing habits. I don’t want to post a spoiler, but can you believe last week’s Mad Men??? So THAT’s what happened to Peggy’s baby! That show is so good.

And Joshua winning SYTYCD - very cool. If it couldn’t be Katie, then I’m glad it was Joshua. He sure earned his money on that show - power lifting every girl a hundred times in every routine. I just loved him the whole season.

I’m totally enjoying the High School Musical reality show - get in the picture? get in the game? Whatever, it’s great. I can hardly stand how the kids say “like” every other word, but they sure can sing.

SYTYCD

I’m a little behind, but I’m only going to comment on this week. I can’t talk about Hok leaving and not making the tour, it upsets me. Just kidding, although it is sad, I can see that although he was my favorite, he wasn’t as versatile as the other guys.

So this week, first I want to talk about all the anti-war stuff. I can’t believe there are still people that would be upset over that Wade Robson routine. I am 100% pro service members, and 100% against this war. I personally think the two go hand in hand. Saying that someone who is FOR peace doesn’t support Soldiers or Marines or Sailors or Airmen is VERY short-sighted. The two will never be mutually exclusive. Patriotism doesn’t mean blindly following the leadership of this country into whatever debacle they create. In fact, if you look at the roots of this country, it’s clearly the opposite. Questioning authority is what we’re all about! And about Mia’s jacket - I’m kind of against civilians wearing military uniforms. BUT, I’m sure she didn’t realize what she was wearing. I’m especially against civilians wearing military insignia - like rank (which is what she had upside down on her sleeves) - because people work hard to earn that - in my mind it’s like people buying Olympic medals on eBay and wearing them around (maybe a little extreme, but you get my point), but I still think she had no idea what she was wearing, and she was obviously sorry. I thought it was unfortunate that she wore that jacket on the same night that all the dancers did a peace dance. Whoops :)

Now, about the dancing - I thought Lauren was phenomenal. I like to think that the fact that I called in and voted 5 times for her, and only voted for Jamie once had something to do with the results :) I also thought it was time for Kameron to go - for the same reason as Hok. They’re really getting down to the best dancers now - Sabra is still my favorite girl, and I guess Dominic is my favorite guy. I hope he can hang in there for a while with those really awesome jumpers.

Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List

How is it already the end of the season? Sheesh - it seems like it just started. I’m sad - I thought these last two episodes with her in England and Ireland were hilarious. My favorite thing about her is the totally ridiculous situations she finds herself in in her quest for A-list status. I’m pretty sure that Nicole Kidman would never find herself wearing that tweed dress with the big bow in the drag queen shop. Or on a date with that weird performance artist guy. What a kook. I can’t wait until next season!

The Singing Bee

Man, I would love to be on this show. I’m not sure if I could get up there and do a silly white-girl dance while I was waiting for my chance to mess up the lyrics, but I would love to try.

1 vs. 100

I watched this for the first time last week. I really like the premise, but really am not crazy about Bob Saget. My husband and I really laughed at all the extra information the people always give when they answer. “Well, since my son doesn’t have an ePod, I’m going to guess C., IPOD!” Thanks, dude. For all the extra commentary. Get on with it, already! That’s why I didn’t watch Who Wants to be a Millionaire either.

With that last bit of judgment, I’m going to end my extra commentary :) Good thing I’m perfect! ha ha ha…

To Independence!

Happy 4th, everyone! I love love love all things revolutionary, and this is my favorite holiday! Let’s have a resurgence of the kind of thinking and activism that the founding fathers exhibited! Get involved, write a pamphlet (um, blog) like Thomas Paine (wiki), repeal a tax like Ben Franklin(wiki). Close Gitmo, impeach the President and VP, put Scooter Libby in jail, send a care package to a soldier, end the war!

Okay, that went in an unexpected direction. But I’m not sorry.

I dream of a day when we have a leader like John Adams or Thomas Jefferson that we can really get behind - not necessarily their personal beliefs, but their VISION for what this country could be! We’re so far removed from that, it’s very saddening.

Anyway, happy independence day. Be careful with your fireworks! Keep water/fire extinguishers close by.

BTW, I just won my final auction of yarn on eBay. Now I’m getting 31.5 skeins for less than $60! And they’re fancy yarns! Woo hoo!

The Price for Rosie

Last week, driving in my car, I heard on the radio that Rosie was being considered to replace Bob Barker on The Price is Right. I read today that she has officially turned them down, and I have to say I’m glad. Not because I think she wouldn’t be great - because I think she’d be the best, but because it’s the last thing she needs.

The radio station I was listening to had people call in and say what they thought of the idea. There were about six or seven callers FREAKING OUT. I’m not exaggerating. Saying things like, “I’ll never watch that network again if they put that fat idiot on my favorite game show!” Okay - really? This is what people get worked up about? Poor Rosie.

That’s right, Poor Rosie! This country is so ridiculous. So she speaks her mind - you know, she was on a show called “The View” - what was she supposed to do, keep her mouth shut? And she’s a lesbian. Who cares! If she was gorgeous, no one would care. But since she’s just normal looking, people have a big problem with her.

I, for one, am glad she didn’t take the job. Who needs all that abuse? Good for you, Rosie!

Paris Hilton’s prison term

paris hiltonI hadn’t followed this story at all - mostly because I could give a crap. But when surfing the BBC, I saw a headline that she was dropping her appeal, I followed the link to read the story. I was surprised to find that all this media coverage is over a 45-day sentence, now reduced by half due to good behavior.

I really dislike drunk drivers - even one-drink drunk drivers. Especially those that can afford chauffeurs. I am an annoying t-totaller on this subject - just ask my husband.

I wish they’d make an example out of her since so many people are paying attention to this story. As expected MADD is not happy with Paris’ acceptance of responsibility or the court’s judgement.

Election coverage, already?

Lots of people have voiced annoyance at the early debates, the huge amount of candidate coverage already happening. I feel like this country is so ready for change, it’s seeping out of our pores. We’re already getting fired up to bring in change. Hopefully, positive change.

I know that in both 2000 and 2004, I felt so let down. How could an entire half of my country feel SO differently than me? For the first time in my life, I wanted to live somewhere else. But my hope is alive again…I’ve cried my last tears.

I considered posting this on my other blog, InformedVoter2008.com, but I’m trying to keep that one a little less biased. This is very difficult for me, because I am very biased. Which is probably why I haven’t been updating that blog as much as I should.
