Summer Reading: Ready Player One
I just finished Ready Player One by Ernest Cline and I’m giving it 5 stars out of 5. I listened to the unabridged audiobook, narrated by Wil Wheaton.
Here are the pros - it’s a wonderfully creative 80′s nerd fest and I loved almost every minute of it. I’m proud to say I think I understood most of the pop culture references, and got a particularly geeky thrill whenever the book mentioned Star Trek TNG, because I was picturing Wesley Crusher doing all the talking anyway.
If you have any interest in the 80′s (especially TV, movies and music), sci fi, gaming, role-playing games, computers…(Cline covers a lot of ground), I think you’ll love this. I don’t even really know or care about gaming, role-playing games, etc., and I was pretty young for most of the 80′s, but I still loved all of it.
Find the premise and lots of rave reviews here or here. I highly recommend this for a fun summer read. There’s even a little love story in it - which was my favorite part. Truly something for every reader - male or female. Excellent book, Mr. Cline! And excellent narration, Mr. Wheaton!
**audiobook-specific side note** If I had to give it a con, and it would only apply to the audiobook, it would be that there are a lot of LISTS (top 10 scorers, lists of computers, lists of games, etc.). This probably comes off much cooler in the actual book. I happened to listen to the audiobook, so the lists got a little crazy. If I had been reading the regular book, I would have skimmed.

Saving Grace and other shows
Is anyone watching Saving Grace on TNT? I really liked the first episode, but the second one was a little wierd. I still love Holly Hunter though, so I’ll keep watching it. Plus, there’s really not much else on. So here’s the status of my TV watching right now:
Everyday:
Days of Our Lives
Uncommon Threads and Creative Juice on DIY
Mondays:
All TNT - The Closer, Heartland, and Saving Grace
Tuesdays:
Greek on ABC Family
Eureka on Sci Fi
Wednesdays:
Top Chef on Bravo
So You Think You Can Dance
Thursdays:
So You Think You Can Dance
Burn Notice on USA
Fridays:
Monk and Psych on USA
Saturdays:
Big fat nothing…I hate Saturday (for TV purposes).
Sunday:
All Lifetime: Side Order of Life, State of Mind, and Army Wives.
I guess TNT is trying to throw a wrench in my Tivo schedule this Sunday, because they’re starting a new 3-week special series called The Company that looks great. I’m going to have to figure a way around the not being able to record two cable channels at once.
I also love History Detectives on PBS. I’m not sure when it comes on - my Tivo just records it when it doesn’t conflict with anything else.
Anyone else watching something good that I’m missing out on?

all in a day’s work…
I made my first attempt at a mary jane’s pattern, and halfway into the first one, I realized I must be using too-chunky yarn. Even though I was using the G crochet hook, as the pattern specified, my mary jane was easily the size of a snow cap. WAY too big for any foot. So I unraveled it. I’ll start again with finer yarn and see how it goes.
My quilt run starts tomorrow, and I can barely contain my excitement. My husband has agreed to give me one full day of freedom each weekend so that I can travel all over my portion of the state visiting quilt shops. I’ve decided to map out a few scrapbook, yarn and bead shops as well - might as well get them all in, right? My brother-in-law even lent me his tom tom, so all I have to do is have the addresses, and Mr. T (or the voice of my choice) will tell me how to get to each shop!
In TV news, I’ve been thoroughly enjoying The Closer and Army Wives. Cable really has some excellent shows. I saw a promo yesterday for a miniseries on Sci Fi called Tin Man - looks like a retelling of the Wizard of Oz (with Richard Dreyfuss and Zooey Dechanel and Alan Cumming!). Coming in December - Very exciting!
Anyone watching Days of Our Lives? I’m getting a little fed up with the crazy-awful Irish and Italian accents they’re coming up with recently, but I like the current storylines. Any thoughts?
In book news, I’ve been reading Debbie Macomber’s Cedar Cove series. I’m on the 4th book, and I really like it. I plan to do a review of all six books soon.
Hope all is well in your worlds!
