time wasters
As if I didn’t waste enough time on Flickr, iTunes and regular old Google. Now I’ve found this little game on Facebook called Word Challenge. I’m totally addicted. I’ve been playing for about two hours now, and I can’t beat Mike Holland’s score! It’s making me crazy. It’s more fun than riding a bike or swing sets.
Speaking of Flickr - I’ve got a mini-quilt swap to make. Our requirements this month are all hand-made…I’m thinking hexagons, but I think a lot of people will doing that. I finished a small table topper and I’m hand quilting my snake quilt. I tried machine quilting it, but my squares are kind of goofy, and I kept getting wrinkles. Even though hand-quilting takes longer, it’s way more forgiving. Pictures coming soon!

I’ve been hexed
So I’m still plugging away with my hexagons. I posted earlier about the girl that didn’t use paper-piecing - just pieced the hexes together. Well, I tried it, and I have to agree…it’s better. I started with some test fabric…tracing the template onto the back of my hex, pinning the corners, and hand piecing. Then I whip stitched a couple of my paper piece hexes. The end result is that the paper pieced ones look terrible. The stitching is awkward and REALLY shows. I think it has to do with the angle of stitches. Without the paper, I’m hand-piecing in line with the seam line. With the paper in there, I’m stitching perpendicular to the seam line. Make sense? Here are some visual aids…
The main problem I found with the no-paper system is that now I have to plan out my design before I sew. So, I’ve started making flowers. Here’s my first one…
I have no doubt that using the papers is more precise, but it’s also twice the work…we’ll see how it all works out. So far, I like my flower. If you need hexagon templates, you can download them from my download page above!

ta dah!
Using Moda fabrics - “fall back in time” maybe? I had to adjust the pattern from Denyse Schmidt’s book Quilts because I tried to make it bigger and ended up making it really wide and short. I added the two rows of bigger triangles on the top and bottom and it came out okay. It’s about “nap” size - bigger than lap, smaller than twin, but big enough to take a nap under.
I attempted hand quilting on some of the triangles, but wasn’t crazy about the quality of my stitches (or the time and effort involved.) I did improve, and will try again. On a MUCH smaller project, first.
Anyway, one quilt done :)
