I’ve been away so long, I don’t know where to start. First of all, I just finished watching the first debate, and let me just say that I’m glad John McCain deigned to show up, and I was so annoyed with his constant assertion that Obama didn’t understand/didn’t get it/was showing naievete. Give me a break. I was proud of my main man Barack for not even acknowledging the annoying little comments. We know the truth, Barack. You understand what’s going on and where the country should be headed much better than the McCain/Palin team.
I chose CBS, and I think Katie did great, but I’m not sure what’s going on with her eyeliner. And who is T. Boone Pickens? Did anyone else see that commercial about pickensplan.com? I’m going to have to check that out.
Now, onto the important issue of fall premiers. Holy crap - ER was so good. I’m not going to spoil it for the TiVo watchers, but I was sobbing out loud! Not just tears, but noisy sobbing. Last week, I went on a trip, and I made the mistake of bringing One Tree Hill with me in my iPod. I say mistake because it was the episode before this week’s - Q’s funeral. So I was crying and crying on a plane, next to some kid who was either headed for or from Basic Training. He probably thought I was so wierd.
NCIS was great, but not on the same level as ER. We haven’t seen the Mentalist yet, it’s still in the TiVo, but I’m looking forward to it. In fact, I still have Heroes and Ugly Betty to watch. Every day I wait for my new DVR from Verizon, I’m falling further and further behind! I did watch Grey’s Anatomy online, and it was excellent. I hope that Army guy comes back - I’ve liked all of his shows that have been cancelled. I even liked the red hair. I’m also totally digging Fringe. Another excellent offering from JJ Abrams.
I mean, what kind of cable company goes digital the week before the fall season starts and then doesn’t have a good plan in place to get equipment out to people? SO LAME.

On one of my yahoo! groups, we’ve been discussing politics quite a bit, even though its really a quilting group. There are some very smart, vocal people on there. In my last post, I said if Palin wasn’t pro-life, I’d love her. Well, upon further inspection, that’s not really true. She has a gorgeous family, but I think she’s really just too conservative for me - against same-sex marriage, against sex-ed in school, pro-life. I’m watching her now on the RNC, and she’s a pretty terrible telepromter reader, and she’s boring. But she is pretty. She looks like Tina Fey. So far, she’s not talking about anything at all and it’s about 20 minutes into her speech. I’m also not sure what the crowd is going crazy about.
It does sound like she put up a good fight against big oil, but I wonder how long that would last if they made it into office?

I do think it’s funny that she’s saying that because she’s not a member of Washington elite, some people consider her unqualified. Isn’t that what they say about Obama?
Ugh. I really just want to fast forward her.
Now she’s picking on my main man, Barack, and she sounds like a pretty, more eloquent version of Bush. Fear, terrorism, fire and brimstone…blah blah blah.
“He’s worried that someone won’t read them their rights.” That’s right - we have civil liberties in this country, dumb ass!
I really dislike these Republicans. I think I’ll call them Repugnant-ans from now on.

I did like when the littlest girl was licking her hand and smoothing the baby’s hair down, though.

I went on a little tirade a couple days ago regarding John McCain’s sexist statement that women just need more “training and education” - not equal pay or the ability to fight for it. In my inbox today was a petition. The Fair Pay bill will be revoted soon - let your Senators know how you feel:
Subject: Tell McCain: Stop insulting women
Dear Friend,
Last Wednesday, Senate Republicans filibustered the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, a law that would have overturned an appalling Supreme Court decision that practically abolished remedies for gender-based compensation discrimination in the workplace. In opposing this legislation, Senator John McCain said that if women want better-paying jobs, they just need more “education and training.” Then, he didn’t even show up for the vote.
Let’s tell Senator McCain that should stop blocking an up or down vote on the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act if he wants to ensure equal rights for women under the law.

McCain v. Women
Lilly Ledbetter was voted against in the Supreme Court for waiting too long to say she was paid less than her male co-workers. Then congress just voted down the Fair Pay bill, which would have provided more opportunities for restitution for someone like Lilly - who’s case was lost on what seems to me to be a sad technicality.
I hope my Republican friends are following this - especially the women. Here’s a good op-ed column from the New York Times by Gail Collins, summing up the whole shebang.
Here’s a quote to whet your whistle - McCain’s response to women not receiving fair pay in the workplace. Or rather, a national average of .77 on every $1. (And that’s just white women, African American women and Latinas earn even less!)
Having delivered his objections to the Ledbetter bill this week, McCain went on to tell reporters that what women really need is “education and training, particularly since more and more women are heads of their households, as much or more than anybody else. And it’s hard for them to leave their families when they don’t have somebody to take care of them.”
It’s hard for them to leave their families when they don’t have someone to take care of them? Does he mean children? Or does he mean the women need someone to take care of them? It’s annoying - whatever he meant. Women don’t need more training. If, like Ledbetter, they’re doing the same work for less pay, that’s unfair, and it’s gender discrimination, which is SUPPOSEDLY illegal in this freakin’ country!
