New season of The Closer: awesome.
New season of Saving Grace: awesome.
The Secret Life of the American Teenager: Good, but the acting is a little lame sometimes. Otherwise, I think the story is great, I love all the soap opera connections between the characters, and I think more kids and parents need to talk to eachother about sex and birth control.
So You Think You Can Dance: I feel like America pulled one over on the producers, who clearly wanted Kherington and Will to be the top two. I can’t help feeling like the whole thing is scripted and contrived, but I love to watch those people dance, so I really don’t care. I think Katie and Joshua are my favorites. And Chelsea. Katie and Chelsea are tied.
Army Wives, I forgot to Tivo an episode a couple weeks ago, so now I’m a few epidsodes behind. I hope they have the one I missed on iTunes. So far, though, that season is great.
I’ve also been enjoying the Get in the Show High School Musical auditions…some of those kids are really talented. Like that girl Shayna.
I think that’s it for TV. I also caught up on all the Harry Potter movies. I can’t wait for #6. It made me want to reread the books. Again. I heart Harry.
Oh, and Mad Men started!!! Woo hoo! What is going to happen to Peggy. Those characters are SO complicated - I really love the writing on that show. Seriously. If you’re not watching it, you’re missing out.

Earthquakes and life
My mother-in-law has been here for a week and a half, so I have been remiss in my blogging, sewing, reading and TV watching. I put her on a train to a friend’s house yesterday, where she’ll be for two days, so I’ve got a chance to play a little catch up. Unfortunately, I put her on a train to LA right when the earthquake hit! I guess they had to stop the train and check the tracks for damage. Scary. My husband works about an hour out of LA, and they shut his plant down for an hour to check for damage.
Speaking of my husband’s work, they’re laying off a ton of people. His heart is broken. He has to fire some of his best guys because they have less seniority than some s**t-bags that have been there for a hundred years. Two guys in particular - one with a new baby and one with 4 kids - are really tearing him up. He’s trying to find them jobs with other plants, with staffing agencies, anywhere. I love that he’s helping them, but I hate that the feels that responsibility. He’s so tender-hearted, I know this must be so awful for him. Not to mention how awful it is for the 30+ people that are getting laid off. Some of them are on vacation and have no idea! Awful.
So, I’m counting my blessings today. My husband posted his resume online and had calls from two big companies in two days. His job isn’t in danger at the moment, but the writing is on the wall. He’d be crazy not to start looking elsewhere. No one was seriously hurt in that earthquake, so that’s lucky.
So no complaining from me about my mother-in-law :)

So I’m down $140, and now our car is misfiring and the engine light came on. We’re having the car towed to a VW service station, which thankfully is covered by our extended warranty. Now we’ll just see if the tow truck guy can get in the parking garage and get our car out of here, and if the service station can get it fixed up before tomorrow - when we’re supposed to check out. Very stressful.

Hands-Free says Me!
I’m not sure if it’s happening in other states, but California’s hands-free law just went into effect on Jul 1. Here’s what it says. Well, there are actually two laws. SB 1613 says:
A person shall not drive a motor vehicle while using a wireless telephone unless that telephone is specifically designed and configured to allow hands-free listening and talking, and is used in that manner while driving.
The other law, SB 33, further amends the California vehicle code to prohibit drivers under the age of 18 from driving a motor vehicle while using a wireless telephone, even if equipped with a hands-free device, or while using other types of mobile communications devices.
Pretty strict on the under 18 crowd – they can’t use a cell phone, even with a hands-free device! I can’t say I disagree, though. I know that personally, I was ill-equipped to pay attention to everything I needed to pay attention to when I was first learning to drive. I got into three accidents and got two speeding tickets before I was 19. I did get one other speeding ticket when I was 21, but I was just speeding on purpose, so that’s fair.
So anyway, I’m a law-abiding citizen. I’ve got my handy Bluetooth Headsets. I don’t really mind it, except it always gets tangled in my hair, and since I wear glasses, it’s a little uncomfortable with everything behind my ear.
My phone is a Moto Q, so I was happy to find a Motorola Bluetooth. I didn’t have to buy any extra Bluetooth accessories, because my car charger and wall charger for my phone also work for my headset. Pretty efficient, right?
Now I just have to get my husband to stop texting while he’s driving. He’s the worst.

Whew, what a week!
Hooray - it’s Friday! I can’t tell you people (person :)) just how excited I am. First of all, I finally finished all my work for the week. Of course, I got two new projects today, but I don’t have the start them today. Well, I’m not going to start them today. Next, tomorrow is my sewing group. That’s exciting - we’re putting together our apron quilt, I think it’s going to look phenomenal. Finally, I don’t have any work (except those two new projects - but they’re small) next week because we’re going to VEGAS! Woo hoo!!!
Now for a TV update:
What’s up with the IV Real shirts on SYTYCD? I scoured the web today and the best I could come up with is a site called 4real.com…looks like celebrities and real people working for change all over the world. But here’s my question - and cut me some slack because I’m not cool, and I’m a marketeer by trade - if you’re promoting something, why not just promote it? Let’s not make it cryptic - the shirts should just say 4real.com, right? Then people would rush to the site and sign up and start changing the world because Will, Twitch and Comfort think it’s cool, 4 real.
Next, Burn Notice started yesterday. My husband and I are about to eat nestle toll house cookies and watch it. I can’t wait. Also looking forward to Flashpoint, which starts tonight I think. Then Monday is The Closer and Saving Grace!!! Woo hoo! Awesome start to my vacation.
Book update:
I read Lady Killer by Lisa Scottoline and I LOVED it. How is it that I’ve never read her books before. I was missing out! Also finished Blue Skies and Runaway Mistress by Robyn Carr - loved them both. She’s excellent. Both of those ladies write the best characters - they never have the characters saying dumb stuff or stuff that doesn’t fit. You’re never wrenched out of the story by bad writing. I sent Robyn an email, and she sent the nicest reply. She’s definitely a new fav.
I’m almost done with The Appeal by John Grisham. It’s pretty good. His writing now doesn’t even seem like the same guy that wrote The Firm, Pelican Brief and Time to Kill. But I still read them as they come out. They’re mind candy. This one seems particularly disturbing because it’s kind of inside the world of PACs and fixed judicial elections - things that already scare me.
That’s it - more tomorrow. Time for Burn Notice and cookies!

Everyone can suck it!
Thank goodness Kathy Griffin is back on the air! I heart My Life on the D-List - and I just live for Thursdays. And I can say - without hurting Kathy’s feelings - that it only has a little to do with the fact that there is NOTHING else on TV these days. First of all, she’s hilarious. Her plaintive attempts at press are so endearing in a ridiculous, real way. You know that lots of other celebrities feel the same way, they just aren’t so honest about it. I also like that she’ll take any job. That’s humility, people.
The speech about Jesus was pretty funny. Inflamatory? Yes. But still funny.
And when she says, “no one had less to do with this award than Jesus,” she may be right :)
Anyway, she’s a crack up. Here’s to you, Kathy! I hope everyone buys your new CD on iTunes and you win a Grammy!!!

I’ve been battling the black hole that is the internet lately - too many good things to look at! And I don’t mean porn!
First of all, I’ve been accepted to a fun swap group on Flickr (thanks, Chickenfoot!) - 6″-12″ mini quilt swaps! I’m super excited. I missed the July swap, but I can’t wait to participate in the August swap. I feel like mini quilts offer great room for creativity - let’s hope I can handle all the freedom.
Next, I joined the Mom Bloggers Club. So far, it seems like a fun group - great website, very organized. So far, I’m much more interested than I was on Maya’s Mom. Not to knock Maya’s Mom, which is great, but I just never seem to want to go on there. It seems like the bloggers on MBC are a little more something - experienced? The blogs seem very high quality - good design, good niches, good writing.
Because of Mom Bloggers Club, I found bookcrossing.com. This is the one I’m most excited about. You register your book, leave it somewhere where someone will pick it up, and they can log in and see where it’s been. It’s like following a message in a bottle. I think it’s the coolest idea. And what a great way to recycle!
So that’s it for today. Well, for now anyway.

Adding to my original post about the CW’s new fall show, 90210, I’m super excited to see that Shannen Doherty is joining the cast. It seems like it will be an ongoing guest appearance. And there is talk of Jennie Garth showing up also. I read about it here.
I can’t decide what I think of this. I feel like Shannen lost her Scare Tactics job - maybe she quit, who knows - and now she’s going back to Beverly…Hills that is. Can’t wait to see how it all works out. I’m pretty sure Tracy Jordan is going to be hilarious on Scare Tactics, though.

treasure and progress
Look at my bounty! And the quilt top I’ve been working on. It’s a Snake Charmer quilt, from Denyse Schmidt’s book Quilts. I’m using white muslin and the Peas & Carrots fabric by Moda. I think I’m going to use solid red on the back. I think curves are much easier to piece unpinned. This took some trial and error to figure out.
