Pickens Plan

Well, I just looked up T. Boone Pickens. I guess he’s gone from bad to good, which I find hard to believe. The Sierra Club seems to be behind the Pickens Plan, but to me, it seems a little unclear. Plus, that guy is Shady McShady. I wonder what Al Gore thinks of T. Boone.

I’ve been away so long, I don’t know where to start. First of all, I just finished watching the first debate, and let me just say that I’m glad John McCain deigned to show up, and I was so annoyed with his constant assertion that Obama didn’t understand/didn’t get it/was showing naievete. Give me a break. I was proud of my main man Barack for not even acknowledging the annoying little comments. We know the truth, Barack. You understand what’s going on and where the country should be headed much better than the McCain/Palin team.

I chose CBS, and I think Katie did great, but I’m not sure what’s going on with her eyeliner. And who is T. Boone Pickens? Did anyone else see that commercial about pickensplan.com? I’m going to have to check that out.

Now, onto the important issue of fall premiers. Holy crap - ER was so good. I’m not going to spoil it for the TiVo watchers, but I was sobbing out loud! Not just tears, but noisy sobbing. Last week, I went on a trip, and I made the mistake of bringing One Tree Hill with me in my iPod. I say mistake because it was the episode before this week’s - Q’s funeral. So I was crying and crying on a plane, next to some kid who was either headed for or from Basic Training. He probably thought I was so wierd.

NCIS was great, but not on the same level as ER. We haven’t seen the Mentalist yet, it’s still in the TiVo, but I’m looking forward to it. In fact, I still have Heroes and Ugly Betty to watch. Every day I wait for my new DVR from Verizon, I’m falling further and further behind! I did watch Grey’s Anatomy online, and it was excellent. I hope that Army guy comes back - I’ve liked all of his shows that have been cancelled. I even liked the red hair. I’m also totally digging Fringe. Another excellent offering from JJ Abrams.

I mean, what kind of cable company goes digital the week before the fall season starts and then doesn’t have a good plan in place to get equipment out to people? SO LAME.

My sister’s dermatologist found a melanoma on her leg. She had a full battery of tests to see if it had spread and we’re just waiting on the results. A good friend of mine had a melanoma on his ear. After getting most of his ear removed, the cancer reemerged and moved into the lining of his brain. I didn’t tell my sister about him, but it’s really freaking me out. He is in the hospital right now. The doctors didn’t think he would make it through the night two nights ago. But he did. He’s like Superman or something, he keeps rallying. It will truly be a shock if this cancer gets the best of him.

So I’ve been thinking about health. My dad has pretty serious high blood pressure. I have been reading about chelation, and wondering if it’s a plausible. I mean, I know chelation therapy is plausible for heavy metal poisoning, but I’ve been reading about it’s uses for removing plaque from arteries.

What I’m really wondering is if it’s like taking antioxidents. You know, it helps things, but it’s not really bad for you. Or like daily vitamins? Is oral chelation like that where it doesn’t hurt you to take it?

I need to do a little more research. But I would love if there was something like that for my dad.

La Bump

Right now, my husband is shopping online for clothes for our son. He’s a little addicted to internet shopping, I think. He was asking me what sizes to get, and I had to say 4T! I can’t believe it. Of course, William isn’t wearing 4T yet, but David was buying him new shorts and t-shirts, and he’s wearing 2T’s now that are getting a little small, and soon, it won’t be time for shorts anymore, so these shorts will be for next summer. It’s funny, David asked, “should I get him 24 months?” Sheesh.

So anyway, I’m still not really feeling the pull to have a second baby. I mean, every once in a while when I hold a tiny baby, I remember how much I loved that part, but I’m not sure. The other thing that gets me thinking about new babies is baby clothes. Sweet little dresses and shoes and socks. Is it lame to want to have a girl for the clothes? The problem is that once that girl was about four, I’d be totally clueless. I’m not a girly girl, my mother was not a girly girl. I have no girly experience. I’d be a total failure as a mom to a girl. Well, not a total failure…she’d know about civic responsibility and books and musicals, but probably nothing about high fashion or shoes or hair styling. Oh yeah, I could also teach her quilting. And some good dance moves. I guess that’s not nothing.

Plus, there is the huge closet full of maternity clothes I still have. And all the baby stuff we’ve packed away for future use.

So anyway, the perfect marriage between my husband’s internet shopping problem and our enormous amount of baby stuff - whether we sell it or need more girl stuff - is a new site called La Bump. It’s similar to craigslist where people list stuff they have to sell or what they need to buy. Very cool concept. I’m looking forward to when its super popular and full of stuff. I highly recommend it to all mommies in need!

Here’s a sneak peak of my free-motion quilting practice quilt. It’s going well so far, I’m getting more and more confident.

I got my first mini quilt from my swap group on Flickr. It was also my first mail from Canada! Very exciting :) Look how cute. The challenge was for the project to be all hand-made - no machine stitching. I LOVE my new mini quilt! Jill posted a really nice story about it on her blog, which made me love it even more.

Fall TV Season

I can’t believe the fall season has already started! I’m so far behind, I haven’t even prepared my show matrix yet! Normally, I have an whole spreadsheet showing nights of the week, channels, shows, times and start dates for each of the new shows. This year, I’m so unprepared, that I had to buy the first to episodes of Gossip Girl on iTunes and I have to watch a rerun of Fringe on Saturday because I missed them. I’m going to have to buy 90210 and One Tree Hill, too.

Here’s the problem. A few days ago, my cable company, Verizon, went to an all digital signal. I thought this wouldn’t affet me because I have cable boxes on all the tvs. We have one of the Verizon bundles for cable, phone and ineternet. Anyway, so we also have a TiVo. So it turns out that because my TiVo is a dual-tuner dvr, meaning, I can record two channels at once, I now need a cable box for each tuner! That means I would need two cable boxes connected to my Tivo, all connected to my TV. That’s just crazy, right?

So, I’ve got an even better solution. The extra cable box was going to be another $10 a month, but through one of the Verizon offers, a Verizon DVR is only $15, and it’s dual tuner! So I’ve got a new DVR on the way, I’ll move the TiVo to our bedroom TV, and I can record all my shows and hubby can record golf golf golf. Definitely one of the best Verizon deals I’ve gotten.

Good news is I’ll be able to record everything. Bad news is that the DVR won’t be here for another few days…and I’m already missing shows. Hurry, DVR, hurry!

I’m particularly looking forward to Fringe. I’m enjoying Greek, Samurai Girl, Army Wives, The Closer, Monk, Psych…um, that’s all I can think of right now. I heart TV.

Daunte Culpepper Retires

First of all, this headline made me feel old. Then it made me sad. He’s only 31! Daunte put my little school - that’s actually not so little - on the map. And now, his career has been cut short by injuries. Here’s the story:

This weekend, UCF will face off with USF. This rivalry is getting fierce - I hope we decimate them. I particulary dislike USF because they were so efficient in setting up their football team and surpassing us in achievements and support in lightening speed. But now, the playing field is leveling out. This should be a good game on Saturday, and I can’t wait to see the Knights kick the crap out of the Bulls!

UPDATE:

Well, we lost in overtime, and the crybaby Bulls won’t play us anymore. The game was super exciting and then a huge bummer. Luckily, there are two more nationally-televised games this season :) Go Knights!
